So after what you said about Seven Tribes being made at the same size with the same margin restrictions, I decided to try out CreateSpace after all. Time to get drawing!! ALSO I started reading Seven Tribes for the first time to get a feel for the margins but then wound up really liking the story (NO SURPRISE THERE) so now I +faved it on SmackJeeves! < u >. While I'm here, I'd like to ask you what your favorite series is that you're working on right now between the three!!

Sare歳 Answer:

YAAAAAY! I’m glad you decided to stick with Createspace, because they really are worth it once you get the hang of their margin requirements~~

BUT WAIT. DRAWING?? Are you planning to restart Ars Aevum from the very beginning? Or are you going to be drawing new pages starting from where you left off? EITHER WAY I AM EXCITED *w*b

Bwaaaaaaaah So glad you like it!!! And my favorite series to work on between the 3 is Seven Tribes (one only needs to look at the sketchbook tag on my tumblr to figure that out XD)

OK SO. I know I didn’t post pages for SJ and Inkblazers last week (it was a combo of wanting to throw my computer against a wall and I FORGOT =v=a), so I figured I’d just leave this here to kinda sorta make up for it.
The final cover for the new FireWire Omnibus, which will be making it’s undercover debut in August, and then a special edition version will be coming out in November-December. This book is printed at FireWire’s new bigger book size and is RIDICULOUSLY THICK. But I don’t think I’ll reprint these volumes in another format. I mean, my style changed so drastically from the first volume to the third that it kinda makes sense that these would all be in one pack. So this will be the only way to get the first three FireWire volumes from here on out. It includes Parts 01-16, plus both Special Chapters, and the expanded FireWire Glossary.
As for Volume 4, it will be much longer, including up through the end of Part 19 (which will start uploading on Patreon in the next few weeks), as well as a new special chapter. And it’ll be coming out in early 2015 instead of my planned 2014 release date.
SO that’s all the info from me. I’mma go back to fighting to the death with a website…

Hi Sai! Thanks for offering your help! I REALLY appreciate it! I've been looking at createspace, (and since I'll be drawing with full-bleeds) there's the issue of determining gutter margins! On the site, the only thing I can find is "a finished book with a trim size of 6” x 9” requires a 6.125” x 9.25” interior PDF." But this gives only .125" for both left and right margins and seems to ignore the gutter issue! What margins would you recommend using for ~200pg 5.25" x 8" trim size book? THANKS!

Hey hey! I love getting print shenanigan questions! :3

I’m going to warn you right at the start: Createspace is not exactly beginner friendly. It requires a bit of know-how when it comes to layout and design, and they are super strict about text of any kind being outside of the margins. That being said, Createspace is one of the best self-publishing printers out there (in my opinion at least) so EPIC KUDOS for giving it a try!

Alright let’s talk margins. For a full bleed document, the margins are going to be .375 inches away from the outer edges on the top, outer, and bottom parts of the page (because all key elements must be .25 inches away from the trim of the page, and the bleed extends .125 inches beyond the trim size). The gutter margins are where things get a little tricky.

The gutter doesn’t have a bleed (which is why the document is .25 inches taller and only .125 wider; every side except the gutter is extended by .125 inches). And the gutter margin differs depending on the page count of the book. For a 200 page book (at ANY size) the margin MUST be .75 inches away from the trim edge of the book. So for your book, your page size and margins would look like this:

Trim size: 5.25” x 8”

Size of your .pdf (and the size of your pages too): 5.375” X 8.25” (because every side EXCEPT the gutter is extended by .125 inches)

Margins: top, bottom, and outer - .375” | inner/gutter - .75”

Hope that helps you out! And let me know if you’ve got any more questions~! ^^

Sai, you are the greatest!! Thank you so much for taking the time out for your detailed response! I’m happy to say that I’m semi-familiar with margins already so I wouldn’t call myself a complete beginner :D! The numbers you came up with for the PDF are the numbers I came up with as well; it just confused me when they didn’t list any margin for the gutter. I DID notice the chart here mention the .75” gutter margin, but for some reason I thought that applied to non-bleeding books, because, wow .75” seems like a lot at first.

BUT HEY SAI THIS IS JUST SO WONDERFUL. Getting this sort of in-depth firsthand advice is invaluable. Did I say “thank you” yet? THANK YOU!

Hwaaaah, you are most welcome~! AND YEAH THOSE GUTTERS *_____* They’re super annoying; especially when you have to reformat an existing page that wasn’t created with those margin sizes in mind…*has had to do this and wanted to off self*

Hey again, Sai! I’ve been doing some research on other publishing websites, and I must ask again… Does CreateSpace’s gutter margin (for 200 pages) REALLY HAVE TO BE .75”?? Lol that’s so much!! If I wanted to print my book with a smaller gutter margin, would they let me? Or would their gutter police pull me over and say, “we can’t print it like this — change it or GTFO”? I’m sure .75” is a great margin for text-based books, but for manga it’s obviously very different haha. This is kind of a make-or-break decision for me regarding CreateSpace, because .75” is too much.

Never mind, Sai! I hate troubling you with these questions lol. I’m going try finding out more on my own before bugging you! I forgot CreateSpace has a community forum so I’ll go there for now instead! SORRY FOR THE TROULBE

WELL The question is already here, and so am I SO I’MMA ANSWER IT ANYWAY hahahahaha YOU ARE NO TROUBLE!

Short answer is that for Createspace YES all text MUST be within that .75 margin for the gutter if your book is over 150 pages. Images can be outside of it but not text. If it’s not within the margin, Createspace will not print (the checkers will keep sending the files back to you to fix).

BUT that gutter is actually quite doable for a manga or comic. My Seven Tribes comic is formatted for Createspace at the same size you were looking at for printing, and that .75 margin works really well. But then again I’m drawing pages WITH the margin in mind…STILL I want you to know that it’s possible!

And the gutter is smaller if your book is 150 pages or less; like SIGNIFICANTLY smaller, so a book with less pages may be a way to work around that issue~!

The yes manifesto

The answer is yes. Yes, chasing a dream will be scary.

Yes, it will be risky.

Yes, there will be fear.

Yes, there will be doubt.

Yes, other people won’t understand it.

Yes, sometimes you won’t either.

Yes, the odds will be stacked against you.

Yes, you will want to quit. A lot.

Yes, you will fail sometimes.

Yes, you will feel like someone more talented has already done exactly what you want to do.

Yes, you will not know exactly where you are going.

Yes, you will feel unqualified.

Yes, there will be awkwardness.

The answer is yes for all of these things.

But yes is also the answer to all these questions too:

Does the world need your dream? Yes.

Do you need to chase it? Yes.

Is today a better day to begin than tomorrow? Yes.

Does working on a dream a little always beat not working on it at all? Yes.

Are you capable of more than you think? Yes.

If you don’t try will you regret it? Yes.

Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes.

If you’re going to chase a dream, get ready to say that little word a big amount of times.

Because for those who dare to be more than ordinary, the answer is yes.

….. aww!! DX that sucks. I was telling Gabby that I wanted to ask my dad to hack our hacker >.> Anyway! I do really like this image~ I like better than the one with the red bg~ X3

Yeaaaaaaaah….And as nice as it would be to seek revenge for poor dead TG website 2.0, it’d probably only make the hacker go out and be twice as obnoxious instead of just stopping….

Thank you~! Yeah, I prefer this to the first version A LOT; the last one was way too red… :/

Been trying not to over stress from having a boat-load of unnecessary work dropping on me (I legit DESPISE anyone who thinks that hacking and erasing other peoples websites is funny. Like REALLY PEOPLE DO YOU NOT HAVE BETTER THINGS TO DO WITH YOUR TIME AND TALENTS?!) *ahem*
I found myself playing around with the colors on the upcoming FireWire ominibus volume (since I really couldn’t bring myself to draw new pages while I waited for issue after issue of magazine files to load on the restructured website). And THIS HAPPENED. I am much more pleased with the look of it now (I wasn’t 100% happy with the other version, but I was drowning in con work so I just left it alone and thought I’d grow to like it more in print). So at least one good thing resulted from me being stressed out of my mind.
Now back to work *siiiiiiiiiiiiiigh*
